Orienteering 2019
Autumn Orienteering – Sunday 13th October
Undeterred by the deluges of rain that we have had over recent weeks, a very impressive 18 riders turned out in 7 teams to compete in the latest Orienteering competition.
Many thanks to Langshot Equestrian Centre for allowing us to use their space as a base. The teams went off at fairly regular intervals to avoid being a ‘follow my leader’ with Michelle and Aaron Lewis blazing the trail. Unfortunately Michelle had left one page of the route description behind so they made up a DIY second half and returned when they found themselves back on the doorstep.
Caroline Shrubb and Helen Edwards – the Snow Whites – we next back but they had taken a wrong course as they had failed to find their CDRC logo en route. Caroline improvised, supplying a Riding Club baseball cap – and got half marks for her cheek!
Alice Scott and Diana Brackley were back next and delivered all the treasure alongside a very sodden sheet which I had to be talked through for making! Well persevered, Ladies.
Then we had a group of ‘new’ people for CDRC – who will hopefully become members having enjoyed the ride and encouraged by hearing all that is going on with the Club. Two teams worked together – Leann Alexander, Anita Banks, Katie White and Katy Harris.
Orienteering Stalwart – the Ever Competitive Mr James Parker, with Claire Webber and Michelle Bainbridge as able assistants were next. James confessed to having got one of the answers from Alice, and very honourably took the points off his sheet. That’s the spirit!
Abbie Potter had been rerouted from the cancelled Area Team event at Munstead, so it was great to be able to provide an alternative. Along with Louise Davidson they were very ingenious, taking a photo of the instructions so that they didn’t have to worry about soggy paper – and recorded their answers. Had they been a little quicker writing it all out on return, they would have gained a few more points.
More newcomers, Emma Standing, Lisa Holland and Richard White enjoyed a very leisurely ride across and around the common but their time taken took them well out of the running for top spot – but well done.
It was great that nobody got lost and we weren’t drowned in the rain and I think everyone had a good time. Obviously the sun came out by the time we left Langshot! Roll on the Spring event, which might be ‘away’ if there is support for taking the ride somewhere else. Please let me know your thoughts.
Thank you all for turning up in the rain and your continued support
