Just winning in the rain!!

Even the wettest weekend of the year couldn't stop our brave team members who trekked over Chobham Common following clues in a bid to become Orienteering champions.

Congratulations to Emily Kruchek and Sarah Leno who won first place on the short course. It was especially good to see Emily's return to success after a recent illness. Runners-up were Joe Brown and Suzanne Kubik.

The long course was won by Heidi Stedeford, Julie Warner and Paul Dixon. 2010 has been a good year for Orienteers Paul and Julie as they also won the event earlier this year at Great Bookham, and they are set to receive the coveted Orienteering shield at the AGM on 12th October. Runners-up were Fiona Stuart and James Parker.

Thanks to Kelly Logan and Claire Valvona for setting the routes, to Sally for the refreshments and Liane and Bob for their support.  The Club is grateful to Langshot EC for hosting our event.

Bank Holiday Bonanza

The Club held an open Show at Langshot Equestrian Centre on August Bank Holiday. Perfect weather conditions and a large entry in all classes combined to make for a very successful day.

The Committee is grateful to the stalwart members who helped, in particular Linda, Debra, Paul, Joe, Ann, John, Sara, Vanessa and Caroline.

Our efforts were bolstered by members of the Quest Riding for the Disabled group who acted as stewards, and they also raised funds for their charity through popular tombola and second-hand tack stalls.

Chobham and District Riding Club wishes to thank Lee and Lucy, proprietors of Langshot, for the generous use of their facilities.

CDRC June Fundraiser Show

This is the third year that the Club has hosted an Open show during June at the Pony Club field at Dunstall Green.

Many of you will have attended on 20th June either as competitors or helpers, and what a great day it was! The jumping and dressage classes were especially popular, and at the end of the day we were delighted to learn that we had made a significant sum for our chosen charities, the Quest RDA and the Surrey Air Ambulance.

The Show’s success was due in big part to the help we received from a large number of RDA members who rolled up their sleeves and took on essential duties such as collecting ring stewards and pole picker-uppers.

The Club is donating £1,000 of the proceeds to the RDA, and we expect that this will be 50% match funded by the Halifax Royal Bank of Scotland in an award made to employees who undertake voluntary fundraising work. This being so, the sum of £1,500 will make a huge difference to the Quest RDA, whose 4 horses are based at Langshot and require annual running costs of £12,000, met totally through donations.

Our sum will sponsor the upkeep for six months of Jake, who is pictured here. Jake is a 22 year old bay cob. Standing at 15.1.hh, he has a lovely nature and is a great favourite with riders and volunteers alike. With nervous or severely disabled riders he is a gentle smooth ride but for the more experienced rider makes a lovely hack. Jake usually leads the ride as he is very willing and likes to stride out on the common. Jake can sniff out a carrot at 20 yards!

The Club will also make a donation of around £800 to the Surrey Air Ambulance Fund.

Chobham success at BRC Dressage qualifiers in Henley

Chobham had a very successful and enjoyable day at the BRC Dressage qualifiers in Henley.

Member Louise Thorne qualified for the National Dressage Championships in Lincoln and our pairs - Louise Thorne and Caroline Shrubb - came 3rd!! Photo's below

Well done team!!

Team 9th and Individual 7th place for MidSummer Nights Dream at Snowball Farm's ODE

A fun day was had by all on the CDRC senior novice ODE team. We finished 9th out of the 13 teams taking part. It seemed that at the end of the day, Dream had snuck into 6th place but on a re-count, we were pipped just out of the placings.

What we lacked on the dressage, we made up for on the cross country course, flying round clear on the time, scraping into 7th. Dream is captured here by chairman James Parker as we flew through the penultimate fence. James had volunteered to help along with Claire Valvona so that the team could compete and for that we are very grateful.

     Team included:
  • Paul Dixon and Willum (orienteering winners see below)
  • Kelly Logan and MidSummer Night's Dream
  • Liane Deacon and Jack
  • Jo Horwood and Vento-W

Royal Windsor Horse Show - 8th for Abbie Audsley

We learnt that Abbie came 8th overall in the junior novice top score competition at Royal Windsor Horse Show.

Unfortunately we have no photographs as yet but hopefully these will be sent on soon!

We're also waiting to get an update from CDRC junior Liam who was representing the club in the Riding Test competition.

Well done Abbie for 8th!!

Orienteering - Dorking in Sunshine - April 2010 - win for Julie and Paul

Almost thirty riders from as far away as the south coast came to the Club’s first open orienteering event of 2010, held in the sunshine on Sunday 25th April.

Setting off in teams of twos and threes from Great Bookham Equestrian Centre the brave orienteers rode a ten mile course set out by Club Chairman James Parker, around some of the finest countryside in south-east England, taking in magnificent views of Box Hill and premier bluebell woods in their glory.

Passing the edge of the Polesden Lacey estate, over Ranmore Common and Norbury Pak, the riders were timed as they collected treasure and picked up answers to clues which scored them points.

Congratulations to Paul Dixon and Julie Warner for winning the red rosettes, and thanks to everyone for making it such a great day. Particular thanks go to Sally Watson for the refreshments, and to Joe Brown and David Hill for stewarding and taking the photographs. Everyone agreed it had been a truly memorable outing.

The Club is grateful to Becki of Great Bookham Equestrian Centre for kindly allowing us to use the Centre as a base for the event.

Best wishes, James
