AIR AMBULANCE THANK YOU

CDRC holds a show once a year to raise funds for two charities, the Surrey Air Ambulance and Quest (Riding for the Disabled). From the show in June 2011, we were able to donate £1,000 to each charity.

A BIT LONG IN THE TOOTH
The first of our series of Winter lectures was attended by over 20 guests and focussed on horse dentistry.

Jon Allan, 22 years in the Mounted Division of the Metropolitan Police, is now a local horse dentist and he gave members a real insight into the subject.

Until around 15 years ago, all equine dental work was carried out by vets, but nowadays there is an acceptance that preventative dental treatment can improve the quality of life of not only the horse but also the person riding it.

Jon explained that living in the wild, a horse will graze on rough grass and eat bark, sand and soil, all of which wear their teeth down as nature intended.  Problems arise when we cause our horses to live an artificial existence and feed them on hay, which is half as soft as grass, and other feeding compounds that do not require the biting, grinding and chewing of grass.

The lecture was enriched with a good array of artefacts. Jon had a number of equine skulls so that we could see the tooth development at different ages and also what can occur when things go wrong. Various photographs showed the damage to the inside of the mouths of horses who have endured sharp spurs arising from mis-growth.

Jon says that in 99% of cases he is able to conduct his routine work upon horses using no sedatives, just the dentist’s gag, modelled by our Team Manager Paul Dixon in the photo! He showed various rasps, such as the one being viewed by committee member Sarah Leno.  Jon said that the actual  dentistry is only a third of his job, the other two-thirds are building a relationship with his clients, both horse and owner.

So, if you notice your horse is dropping its food when eating, losing condition, its head tilting when eating or when ridden, he could be telling you something!

Seminar with Scott Dunn Veterinary Practice at Lyne Village Hall

Over 20 members attended a special information evening earlier this month, when veterinary surgeon Anna Hollis from the Scott Dunn Equine Clinic gave the latest information on the conditions of colic and laminitis.

As well as explaining the causes, symptoms and treatments of these ailments, Anna highlighted the importance of careful equine management.

Happy Birthday to Chairman James Parker!!

CDRC's chairman celebrated his '21 again' birthday on the 17th December and some of the club members were delighted to be able to attend [crash] James's birthday celebrations.

The hall was packed with James's friends and family who, despite the snow, were determined to join the celebrations - testament to what a valued friend James is to so many. In fact, all of the anecdotes given about James throughout the evening spoke of support, inspiration and true friendship.

We all enjoyed a wonderful evening, with lots of games, including a team competition to write the best Christmas carol - see ours below. I believe there is video footage of us singing on the stage - oh dear!

So on behalf of the club I'd like to first ask you to (virtually) raise a glass to our chairman James Parker to wish him a happy birthday and second forgive those of us representing your club for such an appalling stage performance......

Ode to James Parker

To be sung to Good King Wenceslas

Christmas comes but once a year

Let us make it boozey

Careful though how much you drink

'Else you'll end up woosey

James's party starts us off

Get's us in the moo-ood

Riding Club will now trot off

Cos there's no more fo-oo-ood.

CDRC charity donation

Many of you will have attended on 20th June either as competitors or helpers, and what a great day it was! The jumping and dressage classes were especially popular, and at the end of the day we were delighted to learn that we had made a significant sum for our chosen charities, the Quest RDA and the Surrey Air Ambulance.

CDRC chairman James Parker, attended the Quest end of year party to present a cheque for £1,500 to Phyl, the Quest group Chairman. Our donation will go to the upkeep of Jake - pictured.

The Club will also make a donation of around £800 to the Surrey Air Ambulance Fund.

News from Langshot Equestrian Centre - James Parker

Langshot will once again be hosting our August Bank Holiday Show (30 August, schedule coming soon), and visitors will be pleased to see that a major programme of improvement works is underway at the Centre.

The indoor school has been refurbished and now has seating for 80 spectators.  This venue is available for hire and proprietor Lucy will be pleased to receive enquiries.

Planning permission has been granted for a complex of classrooms, offices and changing facilities, as well as the relocation of stabling to see a 38-box yard complete with horse walker and x-ray suite.

The Club is grateful for the ongoing support of Langshot and we wish them well in their plans for expansion

Club Chairman James Parker visited Redwings Horse Sanctuary near Great Yarmouth in April, to say hello to Welsh pony Icky, who is sponsored by the Club.

Icky's real name is Haw Idris, the name given to him when he was born and registered with the British Spotted Pony Society. Unfortunately Icky fell into the wrong hands and Redwings found him severely emaciated at a horse sale in 1991.

James comments: “Having driven the long way to Norfolk, imagine my surprise when I pulled into the car park and Icky immediately walked to the fence to welcome me! I had imagined that if I was lucky I might see a far-away grey pony in a field who could possibly be Icky, but it would seem he had heard about a representative from CDRC coming to see him, and clearly wanted to show his appreciation for our support!”

“I daresay many members support Redwings privately as I do, and having made my first visit there I was very impressed by a well-run establishment that devotes funds to the care and upkeep of its herd rather than on becoming a glossy visitor attraction. With an increasing number of equine welfare cases at this time it is reassuring to know that fortunes of some of the more needy cases can be reversed by the care provided at Redwings."

Royal Windsor Round 2 - 28th March, Berkshire College of Agriculture

Well done to Liam Johnson and Abbie Audsley who won their classes and have qualified to go to the final at Royal Windsor Horse Show in May. Liam will represent Chobham in both the Riding Test class on Wednesday 12th May and the Intermediate Top Score competition on the Sunday 16th May. Abbie represents us in the Novice Top Score competition on Saturday 15th May.

We wish them both the very best of luck!!

Thank you and well done also to Vicki Nugent and Danielle Johnson who came 2nd and 3rd in their classes.

CDRC Social 11th March

It was great to see so many of you out at the Red Lion on Thursday. One of the great aspects of our club is the friendly members and I think we can say a good night was had by all. Thank you to Bob Deacon for organising it.

For those of you who missed it but wanted to join us, we'll keep you posted on when we're having the next one.

THE CLUB WOULD LIKE TO SAY A VERY LARGE WELL DONE TO OUR CHAIRMAN JAMES PARKER!!!

After 30 years of campaigning TfL have installed a Pegasus crossing for horse riders and a Toucan for pedestrians and cyclists at the Robin Hood roundabout, on the A3 linking Richmond Park and Wimbledon Common.

Our Chairman organised a very happy event with 40 dignitaries to celebrate the occasion. Pictured to the right, chairman James and friend Caroline from Wimbledon Village Stables and ribbon cutter Richard Dunwoody MBE - 3x Champion National Hunt jockey.
